The charm of American breakfast lies not in its fancy style, but in its practicality. There is no extra decoration, nor is there any sense of ritual. It is the kind of breakfast that makes you feel at ease and confident after eating it. After eating it, the whole person becomes calm, the stomach is at peace, and the mind is clear. It is not to impress anyone, but to take this new day seriously.

House of pies is a popular diner close to Griffith park. They have a parking lot, but you'll notice that it's quite difficult to get a spot during the rush. My friend and I both ordered the country fried steak and our server was kind enough to allow us to get the breakfast sides instead of the regular sides. I chose the mashed potatoes and the hashbrowns. He chose home fries and bacon. The country fried steak was great! The portion was good and it wasn't too processed like how some restaurants are, but something we both noticed after the first bite was that the country gravy was sweet... we are both avid country fried steak purveyors and we've never had a sweet gravy like that before. It wasn't necessarily to our taste but it wasn't anything a bit of hot sauce and pepper couldn't fix. I enjoyed the mashed potatoes a lot, but wished the hashbrowns were fried a bit longer because they were a bit blond and limp. We had to finish off the meal with pies because it's the name of the restaurant. We ordered a fresh strawberry cream slice and a banana cream slice and both were delicious!

I live in Houston and go to my local House of Pies every other week or so. So when I found out House of Pies chain had an estranged sibling restaurant in LA, I had to check it out on a recent trip! Despite the two being under separate ownership, both give you a great coffee shop/diner experience. House of Pies LA does not have the retro vibes -- it's a little more modern -- but it's clear it's the exact same building as Houston Kirby and Houston Westheimer. The menu at House of Pies LA is comparable, but with more west coast flair. The Frisco was that exactly - a diner classic but with sourdough bread and avocado. Pie options are different, but just as good. Service from Kevin was solid throughout. Realize this review is for a fringe audience but I really enjoyed the food at House of Pies LA! Would recommend a stop for any Houstonians in the area or any Angelenos who like pie.

House of Pies is always a good choice for breakfast or a late-night meal after bar hopping in the area. We had the Early Bird Breakfast (2 eggs, sausage instead of bacon, and wheat toast) served until 11am, plus a slice of apple pie. It's a classic American diner with a huge menu, and it's a local favorite--especially for pies. Every year, we get our Thanksgiving pies here, and it feels like all of Los Angeles does too, based on the lines and constant pie pickups. The ambiance is nostalgic, though a little beat up, and the service is usually friendly, though it can be slow when they're short-staffed. Parking can be tough, but during busy times, a staff member often helps direct traffic. Come for the pie, maybe stay for breakfast or diner food.

I came here for the pies! Now, there is much more here than just that. This place is the standard American diner with a huge menu. It's nothing extremely special, but it does diner well. We went with the banana cream pie, it was banana forward and an excellent choice. The strawberry cream pie was a bit underwhelming and looked like a mess. The apple pie was solid. Not overly sweet and a little tart which I like. Unfortunately, they were out of the Dutch apple pie which is apparently popular. All in all it was a solid experience. The parking lot is tiny to be prepared to wait to park. It was not overly loud when I went. The staff is very nice. It's a great place to satisfy that late night sweet tooth.

We drove through LA on our way back home and swung by House of Pies to grab a few slices to go. It was 3pm on a Saturday and was surprisingly busy. The lady working the front counter was pleasant and provided quick service. The interior was your typical diner, with large booths and a long counter to eat at. I ordered a slice of blueberry pie which had a hint of tartness with a mellow aftertaste. My husband ordered a slice of cherry. Our favorite part was the crust which was buttery, flaky, and so delicious! I'd definitely return for a slice with a cup of coffee on the side.
